Teen driver’s ed

Ohio asks every new driver under 18 to finish a driver education course before the road test: 24 hours in a classroom and 8 hours behind the wheel with a licensed instructor. We run it four times a year, after school or on Saturdays.

The course

32 hours with us, 50 at home

The course has two parts with us. The third part, practice driving with a parent or guardian, is the state’s requirement too, and it matters more than anything we do.

Course structure
PartHoursHow it runs
Classroom24At our office on Marlowe Avenue. Rules of the road, signs and signals, sharing the road with trucks and bikes, impairment and distraction, what to do after a crash.
Behind the wheel8Four 2-hour drives in a dual-control car, one student at a time, with pickup from home or school. Booked once classroom sessions begin.
Practice at home50With a licensed parent or guardian, 10 of them after dark, written in a log you sign. Not taught by us; we give you a practice plan for it.

For parents and guardians

What you need to know

Freeway and after-dark hours both count toward the 50.
  1. The permit comes first

Your teen needs a valid learner’s permit (in Ohio, the temporary instruction permit identification card, or TIPIC) before the first behind-the-wheel drive. Teens can get one from 15 and a half. The classroom part can start before the permit arrives.

  2. You sign a consent form

Every student under 18 needs a parent or guardian’s signed consent before we take them out. We send it with the booking confirmation; bring it to the first class.

  3. The 50 hours are yours

The practice log, with 10 hours at night, is signed by you. Little and often beats a marathon weekend. Our post on what to practice between lessons has a plan you can follow.

  4. Six months on the permit

Under-18s must hold the permit for six months before the road test. Start the course early in that window, so the behind-the-wheel hours are done well before test day.

  5. The certificate

When all 32 hours are complete, we issue the course completion certificate your teen brings to the road test. Rules change; check the Ohio BMV for the current requirements before you plan around dates.

Price

One price for all 32 hours, textbook included. Pay in full when you reserve, or in two halves: one at booking, one before the first drive.

The behind-the-wheel hours can be in an automatic or a stick-shift car.
