Commercial driver’s license

Trucks & CDL training

Class A and Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) training, from the theory course to the skills test. You learn in the same Freightliner, Peterbilt and International trucks you take the test in, with instructors who drove for a living.

Before day one

What you need to start

CDL rules come from the federal government and the state together. Here is the short version; we go through your own situation on the first call.

  • A regular license and your age

A valid driver’s license, and you must be 21 to drive a truck across state lines. At 18 you can train and drive within Ohio only.

  • A DOT medical card

A medical examiner’s certificate from a certified examiner. Book it before you start; we can point you to examiners near Cleveland.

  • A commercial learner’s permit (CLP)

Knowledge tests at the BMV get you the CLP. You must hold it for at least 14 days before the skills test, which fits neatly inside the program.

  • Entry-level driver training

First-time Class A and Class B applicants must complete federal entry-level driver training (ELDT), theory and behind-the-wheel, with a provider on the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before the skills test. Both are built into our programs.

Automatic or manual

Choose your gearbox before the test

Take the skills test in a truck with an automatic or automated-manual transmission and your CDL carries a restriction: no manual-transmission trucks. Most new fleets are automated, so plenty of drivers never notice. If you might drive older equipment, train and test in our Peterbilt 579 with its 10-speed manual and the restriction never appears.
